Martin's performance as a lawyer possessed by his dying multimillionaire client (Lily Tomlin) is such an amazing feat of physical comedy that he earned Best Actor citations from the New York and national critics' societies. But the Academy's bias against funnymen spelled doom for his Oscar chances. If only Academy voters were as wild and crazy as Martin.
