50. MIA FARROW
Rosemary's Baby (1968)
The Academy handed a statuette to Ruth Gordon as Rosemary's wacky, witchy neighbor. But Farrow deserved her own kudos for a subtler performance as the unwitting mother-to-be of Satan. Her deterioration from sweet naif to tortured, anorexic-looking harridan is so utterly believable it'll drive you to antidepressants. Director Roman Polanski may have been yanking the strings, but it's Farrow who pulled off a puppet dance nonpareil.
