35. JULIE CHRISTIE
Doctor Zhivago (1965)
It's not the icy blue eyes. Or the Rapunzel blond hair. Or even the fur hats. What makes Christie's performance so unforgettable in David Lean's Russian epic is her cool, elusive passion. When Rod Steiger's scoundrel tells her ''You, my dear, are a slut,'' Christie simply denies it. Then she quietly enters a high-society Christmas party and shoots him. And though Christie failed to get Oscar's attention in Zhivago, she didn't go home empty-handed that year: Her swingin' role in Darling won her a Best Actress Oscar.
