Most Gracious Sure Things
Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem
There wasn't really any suspense in the victories of No Country for Old Men's Bardem and There Will Be Blood's Day-Lewis, but the actors managed to appear surprised and thrilled anyway. Supporting Actor winner Bardem (bottom) thanked Joel and Ethan Coen for making his performance work even under ''one of the most horrible haircuts in history.'' Then he finished his speech in Spanish, saluting his parents, his grandparents, and performers from his native Spain who had brought dignity and pride to their station. For his part, Best Actor Day-Lewis also saluted his father and grandfather, as well as his wife and sons. Kneeling before presenter Helen Mirren (''That's the closest I'll ever come to getting a knighthood,'' he quipped), he said, ''My deepest thanks to the members of the Academy for whacking me with the handsomest bludgeon in town.''
