After four nominations (including nods for such classics as North by Northwest and Fiddler on the Roof), the veteran art director and production designer finally picked up an honorary Oscar. At age 98, he also earned a standing ovation just for showing up. ''That's the good part of getting old. I don't recommend the other,'' he quipped, before fondly recalling a century of motion pictures and the directors (particularly Alfred Hitchcock) with whom he created such unforgettable images.
