THE WEDDING SINGER (1998)
For several months in 1998, my future wife and I wouldn't stop telling friends, relatives, and random strangers that they had to see this movie! Sure, we would say, it makes lots of broad, easy '80s jokes, but it's so much more! And then they would back away slowly, trying not to make any sudden moves. Well, we just watched The Wedding Singer again, and the magic is still there. The early, funny Adam Sandler has never been earlier or funnier than he is playing wannabe songwriter Robbie, who realizes that the affianced Julia (Drew Barrymore) not only makes him want to be a better man but might actually help him be one. It's hard not to be moved by the movie's message that you should pursue your dreams (even though my wife and I have since learned that's not such a good idea). Tom Conroy
