DAMN YANKEES (1958)
If there were such a thing as the Bizarro Yankees, they would've been the Washington Senators, who infamously inspired Washingtonians to lament, ''First in war, first in peace, and last in the American League.'' So you can almost understand the desperation of the middle-aged Senators' fan who sells his soul to the devil for the power to become Joe Hardy, the Senator's star centerfielder, in this hit musical. In the climactic game against the Yankees, the devil betrays Hardy by stealing back his youth, but the schlep still runs down Mickey Mantle's towering drive to seal the victory.
