John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Hairspray (2007)
Okay, so, rather than playing a man playing a woman, he's just a man playing a woman. Or something. Eh, whatever. All I know is the whole idea of it seemed pretty darn strange when I first heard about it. I mean, Tony Manero as a dowdy dame? Vincent Vega as a voluptuous vixen? Bizarre! But then I saw this summer's surprise musical hit and I must say, there's something so sweet about the way that Travolta portrays the shy, scarred Edna Turnblad (especially in that ''Timeless to Me'' duet with hubby Christopher Walken) that my heart was warmed. Of course, I'll never look at Saturday Night Fever the same way again, but oh well. Joshua Rich
