He may have dreamed up the concept at the last minute, but Riedel was inspired by a long-standing tradition: the Practice star's penchant for playing ''the quintessential pervert.'' To delve into this murky milieu, Riedel chose a ''nice little wretched spot in the bowels of Manhattan's Roseland Ballroom'' and asked an assistant to cast her shadow on the wall. Spader provided creative input throughout the process. ''He was quite particular.... I considered shooting him without the lurking female figure. But he wanted her in there, so we obliged.''
