His star rose prudishly enough as Major Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie. But as sinister oil tycoon J.R. Ewing on Dallas, Hagman not only pushed the love-to-hate-him envelope, he deposited it. Dallas lasted 14 seasons and made him one of the highest-paid actors of the '80s — all justified on Nov. 21, 1980, when 41 million households tuned in to find out ''Who Shot J.R.'' J.R. liked broads, bourbon, and business. And we loved every minute.
