Pansexual elfin theatricality found a home in Farrokh Bulsara, the son of Persian emigrants who took the stage under the divine-sounding name Freddie Mercury. Even though he could've stood ramrod straight and still dazzled with his thick, operatic voice, Mercury held audiences in sway with a mélange of court-jestery pomp and stylized imperiousness.
