Not Martin's first movie that'd be 1978's misbegotten Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but The Jerk was the first time we looked at the stand-up comic and thought, ''That prematurely white-haired guy could be a movie star.'' As the goofy dullard inventor who endures a roller-coaster ride of fame and fortune, Martin solidified the good-natured slapstick persona that would serve him well throughout his career.
