With ''Born Standing Up,'' the actor/writer's superb new memoir in book stores, we look back at the roles -- from ''The Jerk'' to ''Little Shop of Horrors'' to ''Shopgirl'' -- that turned a Wild and Crazy Guy into a movie star
The Jerk (1979)
Not Martin's first movie that'd be 1978's misbegotten Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but The Jerk was the first time we looked at the stand-up comic and thought, ''That prematurely white-haired guy could be a movie star.'' As the goofy dullard inventor who endures a roller-coaster ride of fame and fortune, Martin solidified the good-natured slapstick persona that would serve him well throughout his career.
