4. THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (2002)
This version of the oft-filmed Alexandre Dumas tale stars Jim Caviezel as the scheming, wronged hero — hey, if your best friend (Guy Pearce) stole your gal (Dagmara Dominczyk), your freedom, and your future, you'd be kind of upset, too. Caviezel's Edmond Dantes spends years plotting his elaborate vengeance, and while the plan unfolds with nary a hitch, it also threatens to destroy his soul after years of stewing in his own poisonous intentions. Caviezel would spend a lot more time turning the other cheek in his next lead role, in The Passion of the Christ.
