It had been the No. 1 show on television from fall 1971 through the end of the 1975-'76 season, but this, its ninth season, was the beginning of the end — even if Carroll O'Connor (No. 20 on our list of TV icons) and Sally Struthers both won Emmys that year. Struthers' Gloria and Rob Reiner's Meathead had already moved to California, and in the following season, the series would be renamed Archie Bunker's Place and focus more on Archie's life at the bar than with Edith (Jean Stapleton).
