CHARACTER In a Spain under fascist rule, 10-year-old Ofelia goes with her mother to live with her mother's powerful new husband — the cruel, exacting Captain Vidal.
CHILD'S PLAY Ofelia discovers a labyrinth in her stepfather's property that leads to a strange underground world full of fauns, fairies, and creatures with detachable eyeballs. (Handy, possibly, but blech!)
CHILLING (AND HEART-RENDING) Ofelia's stepfather, enraged by mutiny within his household, shoots Ofelia inside the labyrinth. Ofelia sinks to the floor, the camera closing in on a curlicue of blood snaking down her face from her nose.
WHY SHE SCARES US Ofelia's got an imagination like a dark, delusional Walter Mitty, but she's no match for the larger forces at work in the real world.
