Zodiac (2007)
David Fincher's examination of the real-life Zodiac case is much more like All the President's Men than his own Seven. Here, obsessive sleuths — reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.), cop David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), and editorial cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) — spend years trying to find the serial killer, reminding moviegoers that, sometimes, there's enough suspense just watching brainy people try to solve a puzzle.
