Zero Effect (1999)
Daryl Zero (Bill Pullman) may be the most brilliant private eye since Sherlock Holmes, but he's also a hopeless, reclusive mess of a human being, relying on perpetually exasperated assistant Steve Arlo (Ben Stiller) for most of his legwork. In this clever comic thriller, Zero is drawn out of his shell by an unlikely femme fatale (an EMT played by Kim Dickens) and discovers that he's not smart enough to avoid breaking the oldest rule in the Movie Detective's Handbook: Never fall in love with the suspect.
