4. EPISODE: ''Walkabout''
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: 10/13/04
PLOT SUMMARY: Claire leads a memorial service for the dead, who are immolated in the fuselage. Food has run out, so Locke leads a hunting party for boar. Everyone is unnerved by his militant tracking knowledge and knife collection, and his backstory reveals his shocking secret: his legs were paralyzed for four years, and magically began working when he landed on the Island.
MYTHOLOGY ALERT: Jack sees visions of a man (who will turn out to be his father) by the woods, the first of many phantoms who will visit the Islanders.
CRITIQUE: Mocked by his boss, Randy, and turned away by the leader of the Walkabout tour he had come to Australia for, Locke's repeated plea ''Don't tell me what I can't do!'' goes from willful to anguished over the course of this powerfully reverberating hour. The surprise reveal of Locke's paralysis is pulled off flawlessly; upon rewatching the episode, it's amazing how delicately but logically the writers laid out all the clues.
