One could argue that Don Vito's son Michael was the more successful mobster, having extended his reach into Las Vegas and Cuba before all was said and done. But remember that it was Don Vito who gave Michael the keys to the castle, after building the Corleone family with his bare hands. And unlike Michael, he managed to preserve his family ties through it all.
