Spike Lee dug deep for this biopic of the controversial leader who was born as Malcolm Little, joined the Nation of Islam after a life of crime and punishment, and became recognized worldwide as Malcolm X. Both sweeping and intimate, Lee — and Denzel Washington, who earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor — found the emotional core of a man who constantly reexamined the world and his place in it.
