AMISTAD (1997)
It is a simplified view of slavery, yes. And Steven Spielberg Spielbergs it up by indulging in the flowery sentimentality that can mar some of his ''serious'' films. But the story — of a ship full of Africans who mutinied against their captors and made it to the New World, and the court case that determined their freedom — was one that too many hadn't heard. That alone makes it a worthwhile endeavor, warts and all.
