Making fun of sexist 1970s TV newscasters sounds arcane, but Ferrell (who cowrote the film) proved he could turn even that premise into a hit. It helped that he had able comic support from Paul Rudd, David Koechner, and Steve Carell — especially when they get into a rumble with several rival news teams.
