From Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen last year to James Blunt, the White Stripes, and Flaming Lips before them, we look back at the past 10 years of acts who made it big in Texas, at Austin's annual music festival
2007: AMY WINEHOUSE
Before her personal life began overshadowing her music, Amy Winehouse was one of the most buzzed-about performers ever to appear at South by Southwest. After critical and commercial success in her native U.K. with debut album Frank, released there in late 2003, Winehouse teamed up with producer Mark Ronson for her follow-up and U.S. debut, Back to Black, released in March 2007. That same month, Winehouse played a whopping six shows to packed crowds at SXSW. Despite her well-documented personal difficulties since then, the beehive'd chanteuse won five awards at this year's Grammys, and is rumored to be heading back into the studio with Ronson later this year.
