In this 1950s-set noir, Basinger's Lynn is part of a ring of call girls made over to look like movie stars. (She's the group's Veronica Lake lookalike.) She's also at the center of a citywide corruption and blackmail scandal. And she's got a weakness for cops (notably, Russell Crowe's Det. Bud White). For her darkly-shaded role as this world-weary femme fatale, Basinger won a supporting actress Oscar.
