Robert Mitchum was pretty scary in the original 1962 Cape Fear as Max Cady, an ex-con who seeks vengeance on the defense attorney who screwed him over and on the lawyer's wife and daughter as well. Thirty years later, De Niro raised the bar in the same role by sporting ominous tattoos, creeping us out in his flirtatious scene with teenage Juliette Lewis, displaying a Terminator-like indestructibility — and, oh yeah, taking a bite out of Illeana Douglas's face. —Gary Susman
