In 2001: Space Odyssey, HAL seems innocent enough; a smooth-talking red light with impeccable manners and charming conversational skills. He boasts an array of features: HAL can recognize human speech and facial expressions, he has an appreciation for the arts, he can play a mean round of chess...and, uh, he can reprogram his own directives to have you killed.
