Burton rescued him by obliterating his teen-idol image, covering his face with scars and Kabuki makeup to play a fragile outcast a type Depp would revisit countless times over the next decade. Touching and dark as a black eye, Scissorhands ensured that Depp would never have to return to the small screen. And if you're looking for a reason why Depp seems so indebted to the director, here it is: Burton saved him from becoming Lorenzo Lamas. B+
