First Comic: Cages
I read comics as a child, I'm sure, but the first one that had any meaningful impact on me was one of Dave McKean's Cages, spotted in Forbidden Planet [comic-book shop] when I was a 24-year-old art student back in 1996. I had heard that some of my favorite editorial illustrators like McKean and Kent Williams and John Van Fleet also drew comics. I had a hard time understanding that, since to me at the time comics were kids' stuff like Richie Rich and Casper. But there was Cages, showing me how complex and beautiful and important comics could be.
