JIM LEE
Artist: Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow, All-Star Batman & Robin, The Boy Wonder
First Comic: Tarzan
The first comic I remember seeing was a Tarzan comic at the local barbershop. This was back in the day when comics could be found nearly everywhere: grocery stores, newsstands...and barbershops. It was Tarzan leaping and wrestling with a leopard or jaguar or some other yellow/orange hirsute creature. Now, what I have just described could be a hundred gazillion different Tarzan comics and honestly I couldn't tell you a crap about the story or the issue number. But what I do remember to this day, in fact is the sheer power and intensity and, most of all, the fluidity of the figurework. Of course, the cover was illustrated by none other than living-legend artist extraordinaire Joe ''Maestro'' Kubert. And, yeah, that's why I'm an artist. These are the things that get lodged and stuck in my head. To this day, 35-plus years later, I'm still trying to draw a cover that moves like that and makes all the young kids snarl and roar like I did that day getting my hair cut.
