First Comic: Batman #316
My first comic was Batman #316 (Batman 3:16?). It's by Len Wein and Irv Novick. On the cover was Robin beneath a big box screaming Special Guest Star and Batman, swinging toward Crazy-Quilt (yes, with the hyphen). Crazy-Quilt wore Pajamas of Many Colors and had a hat like Jughead's crown, covered with jewels that shot rays out of it. Another box on the cover screamed ''Watch out for Crazy-Quilt 'THE MAN WHO STOLE HIS EYES!' '' Crazy-Quilt was a painter and the head of a crime syndicate who was shot in the face and blinded. Or reduced to seeing in black-and-white. Because that happens all the time. In this issue he steals a laser doohickey that can be used in an experimental surgery to repair his monotonal vision. So declaring him ''THE MAN WHO STOLE HIS EYES!'' is specious at best. The issue ends when Batman blinds Crazy-Quilt permanently by shining the bright lights from the Jughead Ray Helmet back into his face. Is there really any doubt that I wouldn't become a lifer?
