My grandfather was the managing editor of the Omaha World-Herald for many years, and as one of the earlier papers to add Peanuts to its pages, he received complimentary copies of all of the collections of the strip, which ended up in his basement office for myself and my cousins to discover, read, and color in with crayons. As I've noted many times before, Peanuts is the only example of art which I've carried from my childhood to my adulthood without any trace of irony or nostalgia; the strip is just as applicable to my life now as it was when I could barely read it. I also believe that Peanuts is the first (and possibly only) comic strip to create a genuinely sympathetic main character with Charlie Brown; he's not someone you just laugh at, but someone you feel for, and through.
