Writer Sarah Morton (Charlotte Rampling) has escaped to her publisher's house in the French countryside for some much needed inspiration when in walks the smoldering, self-indulgent daughter of her publisher, Julie, for an unexpected visit. Julie's promiscuous ways (strutting around naked, bedding numerous men, and boozing all night long) serve to distract and then intrigue the author who has a hard time distinguishing between reality and her imagination.
