'ONE' MORE TIME After imagining Batman's twilight years, Miller reimagined the character's origin, rebooting him with a four-part series that DC published in 1988 as Batman: Year One. It juxtaposes Bruce Wayne's first 12 months as a nocturnal crimefighter with the parallel story of mid-career cop James Gordon (left). Though not yet police commissioner, Gordon is a loner in a largely corrupt department; he initially considers Batman a freakish menace. Miller's tales were among several DC efforts to add new life to the Batman comics in the '80s and '90s most notoriously, the publisher allowed the Joker to kill a second-generation Robin in 1989 after a poll of readers called for the character to die. The influence of Batman: Year One extends to the present day, as an inspiration for the gritty origin-of-Batman plot of Batman Begins.
