The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein (1964)
A parable of unconditional love, Silverstein's pen-and-ink story of a tree who loves a little boy throughout the ages of his life is a sentimental childhood favorite. I challenge anyone to read this book and not get a little choked up — especially if you replace ''tree'' with ''parent.''
