As a convicted rapist freed from prison after 14 years, De Niro's creepy Max Cady wears, among others, a tattoo of a heart on his chest (albeit a broken one thanks to a ''Loretta'') and, on his back, the scales of justice, which he looks to rebalance — by exacting revenge on his one-time defense lawyer (Nick Nolte), his wife (Jessica Lange), and their pillow-lipped teen daughter (Juliette Lewis).
