Russian criminals such as those in the vory v zakone can read each other like books thanks to the detailed, biographic tattoos they receive. In sizing up Mortensen's enforcer before allowing him official entry into their fold, the bigwigs can tell that he served three prison sentences (the three towers on his back) and he's a thief in good standing (the cross on his chest). The stars he receives on his knees mean that he bows to no one.
