THE COTTON CLUB (1984)
Francis Ford Coppola steered this sinking ship, about a popular 1930s jazz nightclub in Harlem and the eccentric characters that slipped through its doors. Unfortunately, while the Jim Haskins book was a historical delight, the Richard Gere/Diane Lane version hit a low note quickly, and grossed only $25.9 million in theaters.
