VANILLA SKY (2001)
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: David Aames (Tom Cruise) is a spoiled-brat magazine publisher who thinks he's met the girl he's always wanted (Penélope Cruz). But thanks to a jilted lover (Cameron Diaz) — and a horrific car accident — David is horribly disfigured, and left wondering what in his life is real and what's a dream.
WHY IT DOESN'T WORK: And we're left wondering, What's the point? There are some who think Cameron Crowe's millennial, existential drama is a heady experiment in pondering the nature of reality. That's one way of looking at it. The other is that it's a shoddy, mind-wank of a remake, which only served to make the 1997 original (Alejandro Amenábar's Abre los Ojos) look that much better.
