BLADE RUNNER (1982)
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: A private investigator (Harrison Ford) is hired to hunt down four escaped ''replicants'' who've come back to earth to kill their creator.
WHY IT DOESN'T WORK: There's no denying that Blade Runner is a beautiful, influential film. But the beauty is, really, only skin-deep. The detective story underneath is rote at best, and the performances, save Rutger Hauer's, are cold and flat. Sure, the movie gets better as Ridley Scott continues to hone it from the original, sleep-inducing theatrical cut, but the flaws are still evident.
