BICENTENNIAL MAN (1999)
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Over the course of 200 years, a ''defective'' robot named Andrew (Robin Williams) exhibits sentient characteristics, like creativity and emotions. Andrew steadily transforms himself, replacing his artificial parts with organic ones, and challenges what it means to be human.
WHY IT DOESN'T WORK: The Isaac Asimov short story is a model of clear-minded thinking, with some well earned emotional resonance. The Chris Columbus adaptation is like ''What if we did Patch Adams, but made him a robot?''
