THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003)
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Neo (Keanu Reeves), now a full-blown flying superhero, has to find the Source, which will help him and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) defend the last human city of Zion against an attack by the machines — and, hopefully, save the life of his beloved, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).
WHY IT DOESN'T WORK: Because even though there was one great action scene (the battle in the Merovingian's castle, which sequed straight to the car chase), nothing seemed to matter. And even less seemed to make sense — not the least of which was the Fame-meets-Ebony rave. The first movie redefined action cinema for a generation, while the second one frustrated them. (The third made them crawl back into bed, and pretend it was all just a bad dream.)
