98. THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (1999)
In Patricia Highsmith's book, the Italy-hopping, identity-stealing, murderous (anti-)hero of the title is a ruthless cad pretty much from the outset. But in adapting it for the screen, director Anthony Minghella pulls off something subtler and even more unnerving. Tom Ripley's still a sociopath, but in amplifying his yearning to belong and be loved (so brilliantly evoked by Matt Damon), Minghella taps directly into our own desires, forcing us to relate to the man on a level most of us would rather not.
