U-571 (2000)
McConaughey took a first dip into the action pool with this WWII thriller about a submarine crew (including Harvey Keitel, Bill Paxton, and Jon Bon Jovi) who pose as Germans to get hold of the Enigma coding/decoding machine. Passed over for command of his own ship, his Lt. Andrew Tyler becomes a de facto leader when the mission gets FUBAR, and he's forced to make life-and-death decisions (which the actor does with barking conviction).
Texas drawl? Yes. Great line: ''What the hell are you doing, huh? This is not a goddamn democracy.''
