Writer-director Pedro Almodóvar left the exuberant frivolity of his early career behind with this tale of a grieving mother seeking her late son's father, a transvestite prostitute working the streets of Barcelona. Instead, she finds a motley family, including a transvestite friend of her son's father, an actress whose lesbian lover is a drug addict, and a nun (Penélope Cruz) who's gotten herself knocked up.
