50. Chess (1988)
There has to be one adored orphan on the list. Though it has never captured any Broadway glory, this Tim Rice–Björn Ulvaeus–Benny Andersson gem features one of the catchiest scores of the last quarter century. And in an era where showtunes are no longer in vogue for the pop charts, Chess yielded an actual Top 10 single Murray Head’s bouncy, weirdly unforgettable ''One Night in Bangkok.''
