David Lindsay-Abaire traded his cockeyed, black comic style in for pathos and it yielded a generously straightforward meditation on the loss of a child that amazingly manages to steer clear of doom-and-gloom portent. And it gave Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon her greatest role in any medium as the mother trying to make sense of the senseless.
