THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY?
''I'm not supposed to say this, but when I was coming on the show I thought [the Bachelorette was going to be] Melissa [pictured],'' said David. He also claimed that ABC considered him as Bachelor material last year, before choosing Jason Mesnick. ''I was at a bar in Tampa and they were doing a casting call for girls for The Bachelor,'' he recalled, ''and they asked me if I'd be interested in being on The Bachelor. It came down to me and Jason, and then they picked him.'' In retrospect, David explained, he's happy things worked out the way they did. ''The one thing Jillian did well was handle pressure. I always put myself in her situation, and I don't know if I could do that. If they asked me, 'Would you be the next Bachelor?' I'd say absolutely not. No way. I just wouldn't want to go through that.''
