THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (VOL. III): CENTURY
Written by Alan Moore
Illustrated by Kevin O'Neill
Moore, the elder statesman of modern comics (Watchmen), revisits his
band of famous crime-fighting Victorians, including globe-trotting
thrill seeker Allan Quatermain and Dracula's special lady friend, Mina
Murray. This third volume contains a trio of self-contained stories in
which the diminishing League embarks on quantum leaps between London in
1910, 1968, and 2008 all in an effort to stave off the creation of an
apocalyptic Moonchild. ''It's a rather dark narrative,'' Moore says. ''This
magical child manifests in quite a terrifying form.'' He then adds
ominously: ''The Antichrist project finally pays off.'' But League IIIisn't all gloom and doom, Moore says. ''We've also got a marvelous scene
in an occult gentlemen's club, where all the occult detectives of that
period [1910] are sitting around drinking sherry.'' How civilized.
