THE LION KING (1994)
''We wanted to go to South Africa to record the choirs. It was just before the general election where apartheid finally was abolished. By then, after doing The Power of One, I had a police record in South Africa for doing 'subversive' movies. I remember having this really straight meeting at Disney about who was going to finish the score when Hans got killed. I didn't get to go, so it broke my heart. Lebo, my partner, went. It was a week before the general election. It was a civil war at the time. And the choirs used to come into the studio and basically use it as a refuge.''
