THE BEST OF CAPTAIN KIRK
THE KOBAYASHI MARU
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
In a no-win computer simulation, a Starfleet Academy cadet takes command of a starship and has to rescue a derelict freighter named the Kobayashi Maru in the Neutral Zone without getting blasted by Klingon battlecruisers. No Academy cadet had ever beaten the simulation (which, in the days before the holodeck, actually required the teaching staff to act out being blown up) until Kirk. It took three tries, but the future Admiral reprogrammed the simulation to allow him to win. Did he cheat? Maybe. But he did get a commendation for original thinking. Even as a youngster, Kirk hated to lose.
